EPİAŞ and VERRA Decide to Cooperate for the Development of Voluntary Carbon Markets
Istanbul, August 22, 2024 – Enerji Piyasaları İşletme A.Ş. (EPİAŞ) and VERRA, the world’s largest carbon crediting organization, have decided to cooperate to develop the world’s first exchange-based voluntary carbon credit trading. Within the scope of the cooperation, it is aimed to contribute to the development of the voluntary carbon market in Turkey and to enable the trade of carbon credits (Verified Carbon Units-VCUs) generated by VERRA in the voluntary carbon market to be operated by EPİAŞ.
EPİAŞ CEO Taha Meli Arvas, VERRA European Representative David Gazdag and sector representatives attended the meeting organized at EPİAŞ.
EPİAŞ CEO Taha Meli Arvas said the following in his statement: “With this cooperation, we aim to provide the first exchange-based trading of VERRA-issued carbon credits within EPİAŞ. In this context, we also plan to organize various events such as workshops and seminars with VERRA to increase the capacity of EPİAŞ’s potential market participants and local ecosystem shareholders. Thus, we will increase the product diversity of our environmental markets with the voluntary carbon market, which will be in the same product family as the YEK-G system, the environmental markets product that EPİAŞ already successfully operates. We plan to come together again at the Climate Week event to be held in New York in September to finalize these efforts.”
